                                               WHO ARE DIRECT CARE WORKERS

Direct care workers are nurse aides, personal care aides or attendants and other unlicensed frontline caregivers who give some or all of the loving care that a person's family can no longer provide every day.

They provide 90% if the hands-on, long-term care in nursing facilities, adult care homes and home care agencies.

Well-trained direct care workers proved a stable and nurturing environment for those they care for each day, contributing to the quality of long-term care.  NC NOVA will help North Carolina have enough direct care workers to meet the need for quality care.

WHY THE WORKPLACE IS IMPORTANT

NC NOVA focuses on the workplace because so many of North Carolina's direct care workers don't stay in the job for very long.

NC NOVA looks to improve the workplace and thus the quality of care by:

  • Rewarding a job well done

  • Empowering workers to provide better care

  • Training workers to do the job right

  • Giving extra support to new wrkers on the job

  • Providing opportunities for advancement

NC NOVA standards go above and beyond the state minimum requirements for a long-term care license.
